New Enhanced Standards RYS 250 PLUS

The Yoga Alliance European Registry standards system is to include a school in the RYS (Registered Yoga School) Directory only when its YTT (Yoga Teacher Training) curriculum satisfies or exceeds our minimum training standards 250 PLUS hour. The 250 PLUS standards enable schools to deliver a minimum of 250 up to 300 hours comprehensive teacher training.

The RYS 250 PLUS standards are intended to improve the overall quality of teacher training worldwide helping yoga teachers to secure and maintain rewarding and sustainable employment. 


Teachers who have completed a 250 hours training course can apply as an RYT 250 PLUS The decision to implement the "PLUS" standards across Europe was made based on the proliferation of low-quality yoga teacher training and inadequately trained yoga teachers.


Goodbye 200 hour Standards

Although the most commonly used 200-hour standards still is available from some yoga organisations, we only offer  RYS 250 PLUS. This new standard was successfully  introduced in China in 2017 by one of the largest yoga training providers in the country with over 500 monthly graduates also a member of the association, and in Italy nationwide by our counterpart Yoga Alliance (Italia Division).


Registration Requirements for Yoga School (RYS) 

Example Curriculum Model and 5 Educational Categories to be included in a TT. All training courses must be led by an ERYT member of the association:

  •  Techniques and Teaching Practice: Principles of alignment, the main families of asanas - standing positions, backward bending, forward bending, twisting inverted positions, engagement positions of the core, static and dynamic asanas, preparatory asanas, variations, changes, practical adjustments. In detail how to teach each of the positions included in the training course. Develop the ability to conduct yoga classes with confidence. Lesson planning and sequencing. Assisting, manual and verbal adjustments, observation. Demonstration and cuing. How to show the positions of yoga more effectively, with clear and understandable guidance, the quality of the voice, including the active language vs. the passive, tone and audibility. Pranayama and Meditation techniques. Sanskrit nomenclature of asanas. Safety Risk Assessment, evaluate the potential risks that may arise during the practice and teaching of asanas.
  • Teaching Methodology: The teaching method is focused on direct practise in order to make the student able to build effective, professional classes aimed at the safety of practitioners in perfect autonomy. Class Sequencing
  • Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics: Functional, biomechanical and kinetic anatomy of applied movement to observe students in practice, and guide them in a meaningful, safe and effective way. Knowledge of basic human skeletal structure such as different types of bones, joints, muscles and connective tissues and how they function optimally in postural practices; basics of human movement to understand transitions in and out of asanas.
  • Practical Teaching TT Students: Participants MUST be encouraged to practice Teaching. Teaching must be dedicated to the practice of teaching yoga classes, consolidating their knowledge and teaching practice to facilitate the practical learning of the lessons.
  • Code of Ethics for Yoga Teachers: The code of ethics identifies the ethical and behavioural principles, in affirmation and negation, which inspire and delimit the profession of the yoga teacher. The Code of Ethics is a declaration that provides clarity and guidance on ethical behaviour and on how the entities adhering to the Code must behave at all times.

Accepted Online Components

Minimum online training is acceptable for some subjects, but not all. Content considered not conducive to online learning includes practising asana, adjustment, assisting. The online hours allowed are listed in each single standard page.

  • History/Philosophy
  • Essays/Homework
  • Theory Test
  • Yoga Text Books
  • Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics (A minimum hours can be online)

 Note: All RYSs are required to deliver continuing education to ensure that all Yoga Alliance’s RYSs provide high quality continuing education programs for yoga teachers and countless category of professionals within the holistic and well-being industry.

Within all Training Courses the criteria below listed must be met:

  • 90% of the teacher training total hours must be contact hours. For example, for a 250 hour course minimum 225 contact hours or, for 200 hours course minimum 180 hours.
  • Teacher Training must be taught by a Yoga Alliance European Registry’s Lead Trainer ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) member. *Members of other organisations can convert registration to us.
  • The Lead Trainer (ERYT) must be teaching a minimum of 80% of the course contact hours.
  • The correct YAER logo must be on the home page and training page of the website.
  • Schools must have their syllabus clearly on their website.
  • All accepted students must have at least one year of documented yoga practice.
  • 5% of the training course, must be allocated to teaching.*Participants must be encouraged to practice teaching.

There are three category of professionals that can teach at your school. They need to meet the following qualifications and experience criteria:

  •  Consultants (i.e: Physiotherapists, Psychologists, MDs, Historians or similar recognised professionals) must have a relevant degree, or certification in the subject they will teach. *Evidence required. This category of professionals are not required to become members of the association.
  • RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) member or non-member of Yoga Alliance International. * Must have a minimum RYT 500/500 PLUS/1500 qualification and 3 years’ experience in the subject they will teach.*Evidence Required. This category of professionals are required to register with the association. Members of other organisations can convert registration to us (we do not accept transfers).
  • Non Yoga Person must have a high level of knowledge or skill in a specific field of expertise they will teach. This category must apply for the Expert Teacher a new designation available to every yoga or non-yoga person with no formal qualification.

To register as an RYS (Registered Yoga School) all new schools must submit their syllabus with their application. The YTT syllabus must meet or exceeds the YAER. To find out about this requirement see here

The Lead Trainer must be an ERTY (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) member of the association. *Members of other organisations can convert registration to us prior to lodging the application.

On the School letterhead (word document) the applicant must supply the information below (mandatory):

  • Title program/s and RYS designation/s applied for.
  • Style of yoga taught.
  • YTT format (Intensive, long term, short term).
  • Course’s entry prerequisites (Yoga Alliance International requires a minimum one-year yoga practice).
  • A 2000 words maximum synopsis (concise description of the syllabus) for each single training program applied for specifying the topics covered. For further details please consult the
  • The synopsis must contain the breakdown of the teacher training’s content into topics with titles and descriptions which state what will be covered in the training.
  • Program/s Format and duration (intensive-long/short term-weekend training).
  • Program Objectives (what skills trainees will learn).
  • Training course assessment method and tools (how students’ knowledge and skills are assessed at the end of the YTT.).
  • Teacher Training Assessor/s.
  • Breakdown of the hours (contact/non-contact/online) allocated to each Yoga Alliance’s educational category.
  • Lead Trainer details, ERYT designation and Yoga Alliance European Registry's Registry ID:
  • Other Faculty/Consultants/Specialists Qualifications.
  • The ratio between the end of course practicum exams and theory.
  • Sample certificate of course completion (the certificate students receive at the end of the course).
  • Race Equal Opportunity Statement.
  • Code of Practice Statement.
  • Code of Ethics Statement.
  • Grievance Policy and Procedure.
  • Brief description continuing education program (s) offered.

All RYSs are required to deliver continuing education to ensure that all Yoga Alliance’s RYSs provide high quality continuing education programs for yoga teachers and countless category of professionals within the holistic and well-being industry.

All applications must be complete of the RYS’s Owners Statement or will be declined.

ALL specialty training courses (RPYT/RCYT/YIN) MUST be led by qualified teachers in the specialty they will teach.

The Yoga Alliance European Registry Board has devised enhanced quality Standards for YTT designed to drive improvement in the Yoga Industry in Europe

The Yoga Alliance European Registry new Standards system is to include a school in the RYS (Registered Yoga School) Directory only when its YTT (Yoga Teacher Training) curriculum satisfies or exceeds our minimum training Standards 250 PLUS hours 

The “RYS 250 PLUS” (Registered Yoga School) standards and the “RYT 250 PLUS" credential are intended to improve the overall quality of teacher training worldwide helping yoga teachers to secure and maintain rewarding and sustainable employment. 

The 250 PLUS standards enable schools to deliver minimum of 250 up to 300 hours of comprehensive teacher training. Teachers who have completed 250 hours training course can apply as an RYT 250 PLUS. Teachers are more likely to find employment than those with a 200-hour qualification.
